Past
I’m a musician, born and raised in Austin, Texas. I started playing music in junior high school, on the saxophone, and switched to guitar when I was around 15 or 16. My father is a professional record collector, and from a very young age I was introduced to my parents love of music…except I wasn’t supposed to go near the Sun 45s - particularly the Elvis ones (too valuable). But the wide range and immense scope of my father’s collection is always playing on the turntable, in the background of all my childhood memories.

I benefited from the rich Austin music scene by studying various forms of music with talented (and sometimes famous) local musicians: jazz, blues, classical guitar, and bluegrass, to name a few. And I played in some great bands. I took it all for granted at the time, but now that I am not living in Austin I realize how lucky I was.

Present
So anyway, I play guitar (and a little drums and bass). These days I enjoy playing all kinds of music - except I don’t consider myself a capable jazz cat, even though I love it. And my classical guitar chops are a little rusty since I’ve cut my fingernails short again.My musical tastes run all over the place, to the point where it’s really not that interesting to talk about, and would take too long. You can get an idea for what I like from listening to the music on this site. I’ve been living in Kobe, Japan for the past 2 years. Some friends and I have formed a Americana / Roots music group, called ‘Nathan and the Naturals’. Occasionally I will post some recordings here… I am back in Austin, Texas for the moment, happily enjoying the Tex-Mex cuisine once more. I lived in Japan for almost 3 years, and I loved it - I hope to return someday.

Education
When I was younger I taught myself for the first 5 or 6 years, and then eventually decided to take advantage of some of the fantastic musicians here in Austin. My college degree is in graphic design, but for the past couple years I have been working on a masters certificate in Music and Sound for New Media from the Berklee School of Music. As someone who started out as a guitar player, it has been very enlightening to learn about sound synthesis and audio programming for games.

Why did I make this site?
It’s pretty simple, really: I like making music. But for a musician who sits around and composes random pieces, it’s hard to find an outlet for your work. Since I don’t have a record deal, the next best way for me to share music and ideas is via the series of tubes internet. I’ve set this site up so you can browse around and check out the tunes, or you can subscibe to the Exsert.net Podcast and get updates automatically.
